Lancillotto Borromeo acquired most of the island of San Vittore, which was later to be called Isola Renata and subsequently Isola Madre. Already in 1542 the island was now transformed into a place of delight, where agricultural crops flourished on the terracing of the garden thanks to the temperate climate of the lake.
