New environmental education project
with marble trout at Parco Pallavicino

The project of the park of Terre Borromeo, located in Stresa, is developed in collaboration with the CNR-IRSA of Verbania for the conservation of native aquatic species.

Stresa, 30 June 2021 – For the past few weeks, Parco Pallavicino in Stresa been hosting some specimens of marble trout in the small stream that runs through it, as part of an educational project developed in collaboration with the CNR-IRSA of Verbania. The objective is to create a program of environmental education dedicated to native aquatic species.

With this in mind, we want to contribute to the repopulation of the small watercourse that flows within Parco Pallavicino, which is potentially suited to salmonids, as it is directly connected to Lake Maggiore“, explains biologist Tommaso Calligarich, head of the project for Parco Pallavicino.

The marbled trout specimens, which number around 25 and measure 12-15 centimeters long, were born in the CNR-IRSA ichthyological facility, with genetic certification in compliance with the latest regulations on the introduction of fish species into the wild.

The Parco Pallavicino has been managed since 2017 by the Borromeo family, which oversees its activities along with the other Terre Borromeo destinations: Isola Bella, Isola Madre, Parco del Mottarone and, on the Lombard side of Lake Maggiore, the Rocca di Angera. The current management of the park has given new impetus to many activities for the protection of the local fauna and native species. During these years, the Parco Pallavicino has supported in various ways the recovery of the wildlife of the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, collaborating with the main territorial institutions. It has also developed, together with the Piedmont Emys Center, a conservation project for the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis).

Prince Vitaliano Borromeo concludes: “This initiative is part of a broader project aiming at creating a naturalistic oasis within the Parco Pallavicino, with an educational purpose and not only as a leisure time attraction“.

Terre Borromeo is the brand that identifies the cultural and natural sites that were once linked to the Borromeo family. Today, the tourist circuit includes: Isola Bella and Isola Madre in the archipelago of the Borromean Islands; Pallavicino Park in Stresa; Mottarone Park with its 500 hectares of woodlands along the slopes of the mountain of the same name; the Rocca di Angera,on the Lombardy side in the province of Varese; and Castelli di Cannero, located in the upper Verbano and currently underrestoration, with an expected reopening to the public within the next three years.
