Transporting Cannero Castles’ stairway to keep: work in progress.
The project for the upgrading of the Castles of Cannero on Lago Maggiore is moving forward. At the Borromeo family’s wishes, it will transform the lakeside fortress into a modern interactive museum. The hardships caused by the pandemic have made a slowing-down of the work inevitable, yet it is still proceeding: a decisive step forward has been taken with the exceptional and equally spectacular transportation and installation of the stairway that will connect the truncated tower to the keep.
The steel stairway, weighing 74 quintals, was built in the workshop, like all the other metal structures that will be fitted in the coming weeks, and was carried by lake from Angera to Laveno using a special crane mounted on a barge. From here it reached the Castles of Cannero.
In addition to the laying of the imposing stairway, in recent months the restoration and making safe operations have been realised in preparation for the subsequent phases, such as the façades and the conservative interventions on the internal courtyards. Furthermore, the underground services have been completed (tanks, service ducts, etc.). The project will continue to take shape with the installation of the walkways already approved by the Public Monuments Service.
