The food specialties by Terre Borromeo
The sites of Terre Borromeo are full of surprising discoveries, including exceptional food. The eye’s hunger for natural beauty is fully sated by the magnificent flowers, the brilliant colors that Lake Maggiore offers on a sunny day, and the charm of the art that graces its architecture. But no less satisfied is the palate, rewarded by the many flavor experiences to be enjoyed in different locations.
Starting from the restaurant “Il Fornello, Bottega con Cucina”, situated on a terrace overlooking the Golfo Borromeo in the heart of the ancient village of Isola Bella. A delightful setting to savor the recipes prepared by chef Francesco Luoni with the highest quality ingredients, carefully selected and creatively composed. It’s also an ideal place to stop and indulge in a short, tasty snack, whether standing or seated, before continuing the tour of the island. Just make sure you leave time to browse the gift shop, which features delicious souvenirs of the Italian gastronomic tradition.
Landing on Isola Madre, we find the same magical lakeview scenery in the restaurant “La Piratera”, which as of this year is under the new management of Terre Borromeo. On the menu, local ingredients and new dishes based on lake fish and Piedmontese beef, to ensure a full range of dining opportunities for every need. Among the local specialties, for an appetizer try the fried lavaret with zucchini and crispy asparagus with thyme, the roasted red onions and bagnetto verde, or the seasonal vegetable pie with fresh vegetables and Mottarone cheese, while the egg tagliatelle sautéed with zander, basil and lemon makes a great first course. Among the main courses, the sliced Piedmontese beef with tomato and shallot pesto is exceptional, as are the lake perch fillets with sage butter and rice in a creamy cheese sauce. There are also single-course meals and a wine list that includes some of Italy’s finest vintages, and a selection of craft beers.
For mountain lovers, good flavors are right at home at the Parco del Mottarone, 15 minutes from the A26 Brovello-Carpugnino (Stresa) exit. The Rifugio Genziana restaurant, located at the top with a view of the Monte Rosa massif, offers delicious dishes from a lunch menu that allows you to sample the most authentic mountain dishes in a gourmet key. From platters to several variations of polenta, from pasta and rice to meat courses and special side dishes, all finished with irresistible desserts, the new menu celebrates the aromas and ingredients typical of this corner of Piedmont and the Ossola Valley.
If you’re simply craving a snack, Terre Borromeo offers a wide range cafés and bars that allow a quick but top-quality stop: the Isola Bella café boasts a sensational view next to the Garden of Love, and the completely renovated Isola Madre café offers a peaceful refuge in the shade of the banana trees. The Bar Stazione, in the valley of the Mottarone Park and next to the Mottarone Adventure Park, offers platters, salads and light but nutritious dishes, and on weekends a tasty selection of grilled meats with plenty of vegetarian options as well. Finally, let’s not forget the cafés of Parco Pallavicino in Stresa, for a relaxing break in the company of peacocks, and the Rocca di Angera, on the Lombard side of Lake Maggiore, where the view from the foot of the castle literally takes your breath away.
