The Castles of Cannero, one year later
A year after the official presentation of the impressive project for the restoration of the Castles of Cannero, set in motion at the wishes of Prince and Princess Borromeo Arese, the restoration work on the lakeside fortress is proceeding at a good pace. This is complex work, begun five hundred years after Ludovico Borromeo’s settlement in the largest fortress of the then baptised Vitaliana.
To date the intervention has focused on the north wing of the castle, the Corte Vitaliana and the Corte Malpaga, allowing the consolidation and making good of the wall surfaces of the area. For this type of restoration, types of mortar have been used with colours and granulometry designed to recreate an effect that is as faithful as possible to the original.
The project that will bring the Castles of Cannero back to life as an interactive museum came about following meticulous archaeological investigation and archive research begun in 2016.
Despite the hardships of lockdown, the timescales envisaged for the realisation of the work remain unchanged. The aim is to open by the end of 2022 what is an unprecedented innovative and multimedia-oriented cultural location in order to generate new interest in the destination of Lago Maggiore, which also includes the Isole Borromee, Parco Pallavicino, Rocca di Angera and the other tourist sites of the zone.
